Watching this today, I was overwhelmed by the sameness of it, by the unbroken lineage of rationales for resource allocation, educational separation, respectability politics, insulation and isolation from the “godless” outside of Mississippi and the South, poor whites working against their own interests to maintain white hegemony…
And then there’s Booker Wright, the black store owner who freely shares his experiences as a waiter in a white establishment. A recent documentary by Raymond De Felita, son of Frank De Felita who directed the original documentary, follows up on Booker’s story, sharing the aftermath of his participation in the “Mississippi: A Self Portrait.”
